Scythe Example for WBC 2018

SCYTHE AT WBC 2018

Example of a Rule Change

As explained here, at WBC 2018, Scythe games will not end immediately when a player earns their sixth star. Here is an example of how this will work:
On her 18th turn, Ann chooses the move action and attacks Bob. She wins the battle, earning her first combat star. Since this is her sixth star, the game is paused, and all of the scores are calculated. It turns out that Cat has the highest score, so she is declared the winner of the game. Also, she is awarded 12 TPs.
Now the game continues. It is the middle of Ann’s turn, as she has just completed her move action. Her bottom-row action is build, and she builds her third structure, which gives her a popularity point.
Bob is next. He chooses the move action and attacks both Ann and Coy. He decides to fight Ann first, and he loses that battle. This is Ann’s second combat victory, so she gets a seventh star. This causes the game to pause again, and the scores are recalculated. Ann’s popularity is now in the second tier, so she earns 7×4 = 28 points for her seven stars. (When counting territories, Bob counts the territory that his units that attacked Coy came from, and Coy counts the territory where Bob attacked her. This is consistent with the standard rules when a game ends with a battle pending.) As a result, she now has the highest score, and Cat has the second-highest score. Ann earns 8 TPs, and Cat gains 4 TPs for a total of 12+4 = 16 TPs. Note that Cat is still the official winner of the game.
The game now continues with Bob’s second combat. Coy wins the battle, gaining her first combat star, which is her fifth star. Next, Bob does his bottom-row action, enlist, enlisting his third recruit.
Then it’s Cat’s turn. She chooses the move action and attacks both Bob and Dan. She chooses to fight Bob first, and she wins the battle, so she gets her second combat star, which is her sixth star. The game is now over. All of the scores are recalculated. Cat has the highest score, so she ends the game with a total of 12+4+3 = 19 TPs. (As a result, if there are more than 25 winners in the heats, and TPs becomes the deciding factor for who will and won’t get into the semifinal round, Cat’s 19 TPs gives her a good chance of winning that tiebreaker.) Ann has the second-highest score, so she ends up with 8+2 = 10 TPs. (So, if there are fewer than 25 winners in the heats, and TPs becomes the deciding factor, Ann’s 10 TPs gives her a good chance of winning that tiebreaker.) Dan, with the third-highest score, gets 1 TP.
