` Hotter-Colder Game

SCIENCE FOR BIBLE BELIEVERS

Natural Selection

Pure and Biased Randomness

The Hotter-Colder Game

Let’s play a game. First, I’ll show you a Bible. Then I’ll put a blindfold on you and hide the Bible. The object of the game is for you to find the Bible without taking off the blindfold. Now, go!
It’s pretty hard, isn’t it? I’ll bet you give up before you find the Bible.
Okay. I’ll make it a little easier. Whenever you go closer to the Bible, I’ll say, “Hotter,” and whenever you move away from the Bible, I’ll say, “Colder.” Now I’ll bet you can win the game.
So, the first version of the game was an example of pure randomness. You were just wandering around aimlessly. There was a chance you would win, but it was slim. The second version of the game was an example of biased randomness. You were influenced by my guidance when deciding which way to go. There was still a random aspect to your movement. You didn’t take the shortest possible route to the Bible, and you made a few mistakes (or I wouldn’t have said colder). But, you found the Bible. (It is very probable that you found the Bible.)
