WE MUST REPAIR THE ELECTION SYSTEM
Our election system is broken and obsolete. Let's finally move into the 21st century. That means fully automating everything. No more paper ballots. No more hanging chads. When you enter your vote in a machine, it should be instantly transmitted to a central computer that counts the votes. Computers are extremely good at counting, so there will be no more recounts. And they do it very fast, so the final results can be reported the instant the polls close.
I can hear people crying out that computer security isn't good enough. I realize that a great deal of effort would be required to make the system as secure as possible. But why does anybody believe that paper ballots are more secure than digital ballots. That's ridiculous.
Another thing that's obsolete is the electoral college. Why are we voting for electors? It's because the founding fathers were concerned that the people were not qualified to choose their president, so if, by dumb luck, more than 50% of the ignorant fools just happened to vote for a completely incompetent person, then the electors, who are supposed to know what their doing, would overrule the people's decision and make a much wiser choice. Does that make any sense to anybody? I would have argued against the electoral college in the 18th century, if I had been there. But now that the Presidential candidates can speak to all Americans over the airwaves, far fewer people are completely ignorant. I wouldn't say that all Americans are actually qualified to vote, but I think enough of them are that we wouldn't have problems like a majority of the people voting for a candidate just because his/her name is listed first on the ballot.
The problem with the electoral college is that it's unfair. A vote in Wyoming is worth 4 times as much as a vote in Texas. That's just plain wrong.
Unfortunately, eliminating the electoral college would require an amendment to the Constition. That means more than 35 states would need to vote in favor of eliminating the electoral college. And it's believed that more than 20 states, such as Wyoming, would vote against it, because their people benefit from this unfair system.
As President, I would propose the amendment anyway, and then appeal to the voters to choose fairness over selfishness. Surely there must be some way to convince people to do what is clearly the right thing.
